Brown Bagging It

Starting on Monday...well maybe Tuesday I need to take my lunch to work.

I would like ideas from those who take their lunch to work. What are some of your favorites to take?

I know the left over dinner from the night before is usually standard for some. However, as a single person who hardly makes anything substancial for dinner (read cereal or lean cuisine) that is not a ver good option.

I don't brown bag much. But If I would it will be a Chicken pot pie. It's very filling!

I brown bag-it as well.. Lets see, boxed drink, turkey sandwich, doritos, and some kind of brownie. That's usually what I pack..lol Peace.

I save a lot of money by bringing my own snacks and especially drinks to work (instead of paying $1+ for the soda machine or buying bottled water). Lately I've been doing a lot of frozen meals . . . the ones from Kashi are really filling and tasty!

If you have a costco membership, you can get those lean cusine pannin's for around 2.20 a piece... which is basically their "sale" price in the grocery store... but this only works if you have a microwave and freezer at work...

I normally have one of those and some fruit... but i eat breakfast and lunch at work because i'm working at 5:15am... so we have a kitchen... pretty much anything but burners and an oven.

Bronx Chica...i go to Target and buy 5 lean cuisines meals. either I heat it up at home and place in a storage container or warm it up @ work. For snacks, buy packs of cookies and candies 3-4 for a $1 @ Rite Aid, go to Pathmark & Target.

I have numerous things I take. I make soups or chili and separate the extra to take to work.

I like sandwiches and salads. One of my other favs is a chicken caesar wrap. I take a tortilla shell, add lettuce, chicken, and caesar dressing, roll and eat. Yum!

I wish I was disciplined enough to take my lunch to work every day. Boy...the amount of money I could save!!

I'm good for making a Pot of Stuff (lol). I'll take a box of Zataran's Jambalya pre-seasoned rice mix (for like 1.69) and throw some shrimp and a bag of frozen veggies in there and it lasts for a few days and tastes really good. Takes 25-30 mins to cook.

I also like those Ragu sauces (2 jars of Parmesean or Alfredo) with 1 box of rotini noodles, frozen broccoli and maybe some chicken breast off the George Forman (sliced up) or shrimp. Another 30 minute or less meal that lasts for a few days, maybe all week.

Are we talking healthy here?

Yeah I once brought a chicken fried rice box to work and ate it continuously throughout the day…

I’m down with the turkey sandwich, cut up some fruit( apples, strawberries, peaches), granola bars, cold pizza…

Sounds like turkey sammiches are the ish. LOL That's what I eat too. Ahem, try to eat. I prefer the honey roasted turkey with lettuce, miracle whip, chips, a pickle, and special k bar. So far, I'm going into week 2. I might fall off soon b/c I need some variety. I've considered frozen dinners, but most I've tasted are blah.

I want to thank everyone for their ideas.

Tomorrow I have my own snacks to talk to work so am not tempted to buy any. I will be buying some turkey slices and a bottle of miracle whip. Wednesday to Friday, I do not intend to buy anything.
Manhattan prices are not exactly the cheapest.

It's not the healthiest (but not THAT unhealthy either) but skillet meals are quick and easy. 10 minutes in the frying pan, eat half for dinner and pack half for lunch.

I'm horrible at brown bagging leftovers, which I like to eat for dinner so that I have to cook less often.

What I usually do is take frozen dinners for lunch. At $1 a piece, it's still cheap. OR I take a head of lettuce to mix with the other salad ingredients I keep in my own tupperware at work.

I try and mix it up. Sandwiches when I have time to make them, leftovers if it's something that will nuke well. A can of soup when I'm running late is always an easy bet.

I was doing the Stouffer's thing for a little bit, but for that price I could run to the food court and hit up the $1 menu.

If you want to look forward to your lunch, put a little treat in it (like your parents' did when you were little). A fruit roll-up makes me excited to have a brown bag lunch....a pudding cup is a real treat!

Try some deli meat in a pita with lettuce, tomato or whatever your choice. You can change up the spread you use. You can switch out mayo, mustard, avocado, hummus or an olive tapende (which is very good, btw). As a side, you can bringa bag of chips, or an easy veggie and bean salad (try a diced cucumber, tomato and black beans). You can make it on a Sunday and use it for the rest of the week.

stock up on snacks and drinks to take to work.. you'll save money.

foods like pasta, rice, stewed/braised chicken or beef and steamed veggies are easy to reheat..

when i was disciplined, i cooked 3-4 meals on Sundays and froze them for the week..

I work in an elementary school where my lunch could be very easily accessable, but having just graduated from college and beginning my career, I have a goal of paying off student loans and I believe that every penny counts! Many Sundays I fix up five salads so that in the morning I just have to throw the salad in my bag along with a little salad dressing, a Wasa cracker with peanut butter and raisins and a cup of pudding. Three weeks into the school year I have already grown a little tired of the routine, so last week I took a cup of yogurt each day along with some kind of fruit and a piece of cheese. Every once in a while I have also been known to throw in a special treat, such as a cookie, however, that can be tricky to eat with twenty pairs of eyes watching intently each time you reach your hand into your lunch bag. I have found that it becomes easier to throw treats in your bag once you have brought the same thing for several days in a row because by then even the children are tired of the same thing over again and they stop eyeing what you've brought...lol!!!=)

I agree with the "same thing gets boring" week in and week out, but I pack my lunch religiously! Yogurt and chips or pretzels, cottage cheese w/fruit, sandwiches, tuna salad, peanut butter crackers and cheese, leftovers, hot pockets, lean cuisine....I try to keep a nice variety on hand so as not to get bored.
